The current crisis we’re enduring with Covid-19 is taking a toll on more than our physical well-being. A recent Kaiser poll showed that nearly half of Americans feel the coronavirus crisis is harming their mental health. Suicide and crisis call and text hotlines have reported “unprecedented” spikes in the number of calls they receive, and many are concerned this could mean a rise in suicides. The suicide rate in the United States has already been increasing, with the latest available data from 2018 showing it at an 80-year high. With the pandemic creating an increase in certain risk factors for suicide, an April journal article in JAMA Psychiatry questioned whether suicide mortality and the coronavirus pandemic could create a “perfect storm.” Their concerns included increased economic stress and social isolation , decreased access to community and religious support, barriers to mental health treatment, a rise in illness and medical problems, national anxiety outcomes, … [Read more...] about Saving Lives from Suicide During a Pandemic

America Is Facing a Teen Suicide Pandemic
Six months ago, we could not have imagined that our daily vocabulary would be filled with the p-word. And while perhaps we are getting tired of hearing the word pandemic , I can’t help but ask why we haven’t used it to bring urgency to confronting teen suicide. The race to find a cure to the COVID-19 pandemic certainly is front and center, but that same sense of urgency does not seem to be evident for the unsettling rise in teen suicide. In the United States, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death—with more than 2,000 14- to 18-year-olds dying every year by suicide, and accounting for about one of every three injury-related deaths . That’s the equivalent of losing a large high school’s worth of teenagers to suicide, year after year. These numbers demand our attention . New CDC data reveal that almost one in five teens across the nation have seriously considered attempting suicide. Picture a typical high school classroom of 25 students. About five of those … [Read more...] about America Is Facing a Teen Suicide Pandemic
On Being an Ally
I was sitting at my desk when a friend called. By friend , I don’t mean a member of that small group of people I speak to every day. I also don’t mean an acquaintance I rarely saw or kept contact with. He was comfortably in that middle group—someone I spoke to about once a month. We met within the last year. There was plenty left to learn about each other. His voice was quieter than usual. Subdued. He said, “Are you okay? I’m just calling to check in on you.” I had no idea what he was talking about. My last few weeks had been uneventful. It was summertime, so work was quiet. And I hadn’t shared anything with anyone that could’ve been misinterpreted as me having a hard time, so this question should not have been the first thing I heard when I picked up the phone. Perhaps he called the wrong person. I said, “Yeah. Why do you ask?” “I just heard about what happened.” It was 2016. He was talking about Philando Castile, who had just been killed by a police officer in his car in … [Read more...] about On Being an Ally
The Three Things You Must Disconnect to Be Free of Anxiety
A client told me he loved his father. He said his father was a great guy when he was sober. But when his father started to drink, he knew he was going to be hit. Thus, as a child, when his father started drinking, my client started releasing stress hormones . The hormones caused physical sensations of arousal (increased heart rate, increased breathing rate, sweatiness, tension, and hyper-alertness). Since arousal was followed by being hit, it made perfect sense for my client to connect the physical sensations of arousal with fear and danger. When a house is built, plumbing and wiring are installed early in the process. Once installed, the pipes and wires are likely to remain unchanged for the life of the house. The same is true of the brain’s wiring. Early relationships literally wire up a child’s emotional-control circuitry. An experience that linked arousal to fear and linked fear to danger may have taken place long ago. It may have taken place even before memory was … [Read more...] about The Three Things You Must Disconnect to Be Free of Anxiety
