Criticising a teenager for wearing culturally insensitive clothes may seem like a trivial matter - but once the cultural police get to decide who can wear what, it is only a matter of time before they are able to impose their will on other aspects of our lives. Keziah Daum never imagined that she would find herself the target of a nasty twitter-storm. She made the mistake of posting pictures of herself wearing a red silk Chinese dress to her high school prom. One twitter-warrior complained: "My culture is NOT your goddamn prom dress." Another asked "What’s the theme of your life? Ignorant”? And it was only a matter of time before Keziah was branded with the R-word! One troll asked, "Was the theme of prom casual racism?" Evidently, for social justice warriors, wearing clothes or costumes from another culture constitutes a crime that goes by the name of cultural appropriation. In recent times universities have become the hot-bed of the crusade against cultural … [Read more...] about The cultural appropriation police are turning fried chicken, dreadlocks and prom dresses into a race row

Teen who wears Chinese dress ripped for cultural appropriation
A high school student in Utah was accused of cultural appropriation after posting a picture of herself in the traditional Chinese dress she wore to her senior prom. Keziah Daum, 18, who is not Asian, was stunned by the reaction to a photo of her in a red, high-collared cheongsam (also known as a qipao) she bought at a vintage-clothing store in Salt Lake City, the Washington Post reported. “I thought (the dress) was absolutely beautiful,” she said, adding that it “really gave me a sense of appreciation and admiration for other cultures and their beauty.” Others had very different reactions, as the long-running debate about the different between appreciation and appropriation found fresh fuel. Katy Perry, Kylie Jenner, Karlie Kloss, Selena Gomez and Mylie Cyrus have all been drawn into the heated conversation. “My culture is NOT your (expletive) prom dress,” Jeremy Lam tweeted. He went on to explain the history of the qipao, which, he noted, … [Read more...] about Teen who wears Chinese dress ripped for cultural appropriation

Has boozy mom culture gone too far?
Social media feeds are rife with memes depicting exhausted women guzzling wine in giant glasses, with phrases like, "Technically, you're not drinking alone if your kids are home." They refer to wine as "mommy juice" or to the hour of "wine o'clock" — a time that mothers look forward to as a way to get through the stress of raising their children. From Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to movies and store shelves, a ubiquitous narrative has taken hold in popular culture: that it's acceptable, expected and funny for moms to use wine to make it through the day. Yet, while many women share these images in jest and don't have a problem, addiction experts and those who have battled addiction themselves say the trend minimizes the dangers of drinking to excess. "Mommy's wine has become a pop culture trend, a marketer's dream and a hashtag," said Dr. Crystal Tennille Clark, a psychiatrist and assistant professor at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine who specializes in women's … [Read more...] about Has boozy mom culture gone too far?
Culture Secretary Matt Hancock attacks FA chiefs plan to sell Wembley stadium
CULTURE Secretary Matt Hancock last night stepped in to the row over the sale of Wembley and revealed he is hauling in FA bosses. The government‘s sport supremo acted after a furious backlash from football fans. There are fears that the planned £1billion deal will see the England team lose the stadium as its permanent home. Speaking to The Sun, Mr Hancock revealed he will demand the Football Association ensure that Wembley remains England’s full time base “for generations to come” during talks with them this week. Mr Hancock said: “Wembley is the home of English football and it always must be. “Our iconic stadium holds a special place in the heart of football fans across the country so it is important that the FA listen to the views of supporters before making any final decision. “This is a decision that should not be rushed.” The Cabinet minister added: “I will be discussing this with the FA and Sport England in the coming … [Read more...] about Culture Secretary Matt Hancock attacks FA chiefs plan to sell Wembley stadium
