Home Health Health on January 19, 2022 There is no evidence of injectable steroids benefitting Covid patients not requiring oxygen supplementation or in continuation after discharge, according to the revised 'Clinical Guidance for Management of Adult COVID-19 Patients'. The revised guidelines issued by AIIMS, ICMR-COVID-19 National Task Force and Joint Monitoring Group (DGHS) under the Union health ministry also stated that anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory therapy, such as steroids, can have the risk of secondary infection like invasive mucormycosis, when used too early, at a higher dose or for longer than required. Injection methylprednisolone 0.5 to one mg/kg in two divided doses, or an equivalent dose of dexamethasone, can be given usually for a duration of five to 10 days in moderate cases, the guidelines stated. The same drug in two divided doses of one to two mg/kg can be given for the same duration in severe cases. … [Read more...] about COVID-19 Treatment: Govt Issues Revised Guidelines On Use Of Drugs, Therapies

Home Health Health on January 18, 2022 Hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malaria drug controversially touted as a cure for COVID despite a lack of robust evidence, is creating renewed interest as a potential treatment for omicron. The discussion has been sparked by a new study from the University of Glasgow, which is yet to be published in a scientific journal, that looks at how antibodies from vaccines block omicron from entering cells. The researchers conclude, as many others have, that antibodies (the proteins that neutralise the virus) against previous variants or induced by vaccines are less effective against omicron. What's interesting, though, is that the study finds that omicron may have changed the way it enters cells. SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID, is coated in a lipid bilayer (a thin membrane made of two layers) just like our cells. When the virus enters our cells, the bilayers fuse like oil droplets on the … [Read more...] about Omicron: Is Anti-Malaria Drug Hydroxychloroquine Really Effective Against The COVID Variant?
Home Health Health on January 19, 2022 Asymptomatic animal handlers at a private zoo in South Africa transmitted the Delta variant of COVID-19 to captive lions, who were placed in quarantine and developed symptoms like breathing problems, runny nose and dry cough, according to a recent study by a team of scientists from the University of Pretoria. The research report, published recently in the journal 'Viruses’, also urged members of the public to be aware of the possibility of infecting their pet cats and dogs if they have COVID-19. The team was led by Professor Marietjie Venter, Head of the Zoonotic, Arbo-and Respiratory Virus Programme at the university's Department of Medical Virology; and Professor Katja Koeppel, Associate Professor of Wildlife Health at the Faculty of Veterinary Science. They conducted a study on three sick lions at the zoo during South Africa’s third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic late in 2021. “The team of … [Read more...] about Asymptomatic Animal Handlers Transmit COVID Delta Variant To Lions At Zoo In South Africa: Study
Home Pregnancy parenting Kids Kids on January 18, 2022 Lockdowns during the pandemic aimed to limit the spread of COVID-19 and related deaths. However, these lockdowns also affected how active people were. Children became significantly more sedentary. There is a risk that short term changes in children’s physical activity in reaction to COVID-19 may end up extending beyond the duration of the pandemic. It is very easy for habits to become established, and for a more sedentary and less physically active lifestyle to become normal and ingrained in young people. However, there are ways children can be encouraged to be more active. These include getting the whole family involved in physical activity and building exercise into a routine. Global Trend Research from around the world has examined the extent that COVID-19 restrictions have had on children and their levels of physical activity. Canadian researchers carried out an online … [Read more...] about Children Exercised Less During COVID Lockdown – 4 Tips To get Them Moving Again
