Norfolk police arrested two men in Norwich yesterday morning, following an allegation around the signatures for the nomination for the Conservative candidate in Mancroft ward. Police said a 28-year-old man and a 21-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit election fraud, specifically conspiracy to submit nomination papers containing fraudulent signatures. Last night one of them claimed he had been released with “no further investigation”. One of the arrested men is understood to be Alex Jackson-Dennis, 21, the deputy chair political of Norwich Conservatives. Picture: Ian Burt Norfolk police arrested two men at an address in Norwich this morning, following an allegation around the signatures for the nomination for the Conservative candidate in Mancroft ward. Police said a 28-year-old man and a 21-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit election fraud, specifically conspiracy to submit nomination papers containing fraudulent signatures. The Conservative candidate for Mancroft ward was Iain Gwynn, but it is understood he is not one of the men who has been arrested. There is no suggestion that Mr Gwynn was aware of the alleged activity. The two arrested men are in police custody awaiting questioning. Councils have a variety of electoral cycles, so not all councillors are elected at the same time. Norwich and Great Yarmouth hold their elections by thirds. At Norwich City Council 13 of 39 seats are up for election and at Great Yarmouth Borough Council 14 out of 39 seats are being contested. In Norwich, the Conservatives, Greens, Labour and the Liberal Democrats have a full slate of candidates for all 13 divisions, but UKIP are fielding no candidates. Norwich City Council is currently under the control of Labour. They have 26 seats, the Green Party 10 and the Liberal Democrats three. This is the last time Great Yarmouth Borough Council, which is under Conservative control, will carry out elections by thirds.
