Honeymoon Earned By Collecting Garbage

· October 6, 2008 ·

Home Relationship Marriage and beyond Marriage And Beyond oi-Staff By Staff on October 6, 2008 More and more people turn 'green' for the environmental cause. This time a couple chose to recycle the garbage for their honeymoon. Gathering "rubbish" may help you earn a beautiful honeymoon trip, for that is what happened with a couple who spent three months hunting for more than 60,000 pieces for recycling in order to make air miles for their honeymoon. John and Ann Till trawled the streets near their home gathering cans, bottles and containers to put in the recycling centre at their local supermarket. The couple had calculated that every four recycled items they posted into the machine, they would receive a reward point, which could be converted into air miles. And thus clocking up the miles for their honeymoon, they finally gathered enough points to earn 36,000 miles, which they used to fly back from their trip to … [Read more...] about Honeymoon Earned By Collecting Garbage

Vernon Reid and the Power of Comic Book Complexity

· July 24, 2017 ·

By Michael A. Friedman “Look in my eyes, what do you see? The cult of personality . I know your anger , I know your dreams . I’ve been everything you want to be. I’m the cult of personality.” — from “ Cult of Personality ” by Living Colour There is something enticing about viewing the world in simplistic all-or-none terms of “good” and “evil.” We love seeing ourselves as righteous and perfect, while viewing those with whom we have conflict as villainous and devoid of moral value. Why get involved in the stickiness of the complexity of human interaction? And often we choose our entertainment based on our desire for this fantasy world. Good guys versus bad guys, cops versus robbers, superheroes versus villains — these are the dichotomies that pervade our cultural landscape. And the more intense the retribution, the better – because if … [Read more...] about Vernon Reid and the Power of Comic Book Complexity

Doppelganger-Based Training: “Fake It Till You Make It” 2.0

· February 11, 2021 ·

Background information: Merriam-Webster defines doppelgänger as "1. A ghostly counterpart of a living person; 2. A person who closely resembles another living person; 3. The opposite side of a personality: alter ego." Self-efficacy refers to someone's "belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments" (Bandura, 1977, 1986, 1997) and reflects an individual's "ability to exert control over one's motivation, behavior, and social environment." Source: metamorworks/Shutterstock New research from Switzerland explores how using a "doppelganger" avatar as a role model that resembles a trainee during a virtual reality (VR) training session designed to improve public speaking compares to using a "virtual self" that doesn't resemble the trainee's physical appearance. These findings ( Kleinlogel et al., 2021 ) on how imitating one's virtual self can accelerate learning were published on February 10 in the journal PLOS ONE . … [Read more...] about Doppelganger-Based Training: “Fake It Till You Make It” 2.0

Mothers Deserve to Feel Like Heroes of the Pandemic

· February 5, 2021 ·

Source: BRO(.)vector/Shutterstock All of us have been impacted by the pandemic, but mothers in particular are bearing a burden of responsibility that is almost intolerable. Recent headlines and data from the last year are grim: Women have lost more jobs than men. According to U.S. Department of Labor data, women lost 156,000 jobs overall in December 2020, while men gained 16,000. More than just a lost foothold in a profession, reduced work hours, layoffs, and vacated jobs often trigger food insecurity and homelessness. The pandemic economy has hit child care workers, who are predominantly women, especially hard. Sixty percent of licensed child care centers have closed during the pandemic, and as many as 4.5 million child care slots could be permanently lost due to the pandemic. Interruptions caused by child care affect women more than men. Studies show that as a result of school, child care, and camp closings, significantly more women than men have reduced their work … [Read more...] about Mothers Deserve to Feel Like Heroes of the Pandemic
