Like many people, I started the new year vowing to lead a healthier lifestyle. I plan to eat better, exercise harder, and make more time for friends and family. I’m also planning to do more volunteer work, and lucky for me, it’s good for my health. Multiple studies over the years have found that people who spend time volunteering are healthier and happier and have stronger immune systems and lower rates of anxiety and depression. (This is also common practice in many other foreign countries.) The trailing spouse visa, besides having a demoralizing name, prohibited us from working. So how did we stave off crippling homesickness and stay upbeat, especially when faced with the endless cold and smog of Beijing winters? … [Read more...] about What’s One of the Best Ways to Stay Healthy, Even in China?

Home Health Wellness Wellness oi-Devika Bandyopadhya By Devika Bandyopadhya on May 1, 2019 Many of you would have come across the term infrared sauna. So, what exactly is it? Well, an infrared sauna is a type of sauna that makes use of light to create heat. It is different from a traditional sauna. Unlike a traditional sauna, which uses heat to warm the air and in turn warm your body, infrared sauna heats the body directly without creating warmth in the air around you . Sauna attained its fame from the belief that it can create the effects that occur as a result of moderate exercise (such as increased heart rate and vigorous sweating). The effects of a regular sauna can be achieved through an infrared sauna but at a much lesser temperature . This makes it accessible to people who fear conventional saunas due to the fact of being unable to tolerate the heat. Although several studies have looked at how infrared saunas can be used for the treatment of several … [Read more...] about Infrared Sauna Treatment: Benefits, Safety And Potential Side Effects
The villains of BBC's Happy Valley abduct a young woman and get the storyline rolling. (Original screen capture.) "The world needs villains so there can be heroes." So says Netflix promotional material for the BBC television series Happy Valley. Do we, really? The right villain can certainly heighten our interest in a story. Where would Sherlock Holmes be without Moriarty, Superman without Lex Luthor, Batman without the Joker? Actually, they would still be heroes without those arch-nemeses. Despite all the movies and other adaptations, Professor Moriarty died in the same Arthur Conan Doyle story in which he first appeared. Superman constantly soars about, redirecting asteroids that might strike planet Earth and catching damaged airliners before they can crash. Batman has a rich gallery of other rogues to challenge him. Bruce Wayne would not become Batman without a mugger killing Bruce's parents, but the character's altruistic parents were nevertheless … [Read more...] about Serpents in a Happy Valley: Does the World Need Villains?
