Even at 10 years old, I knew what integrity meant. Maybe I couldn’t articulate it; however, I knew when I was doing something wrong. I remember a time I had a fight with my 8-year-old brother and wanted to get back at him. This usually meant hitting him in his arm since my ability to talk things out had not quite fully developed yet. He was a smart kid and he knew I was going to hit him, so he stayed away from me. I remember being frustrated that I couldn’t catch him and eventually I said, “Hey, if you come back over here I won’t hit you.” He trusted me and returned within striking distance. As soon as he was close enough I hit him in the arm. While I was only 10, I knew what I did was dishonest and compromised my integrity. Certainly, the fact that 8- and 10-year-old boys fight in families is nothing revelatory. The part of this story that bothered me was that I gave my word and broke it. I basically compromised my integrity to get back at him at that moment. My desire for … [Read more...] about Do We Live By the Ethics We Teach Our Children?

Climate change isn’t a new phenomenon. For years, the media has flooded us with images of raging wildfires in California and Australia, prolonged droughts in South Asia and East Africa, and polar bears starving in the Arctic. But much less is discussed about what happens to the people whose homes have vanished, whose livelihoods were destroyed, and who were forced to migrate because of climate change. One hidden consequence is increased vulnerability to human trafficking among what we now call “climate refugees.” You may have heard of the term “climate refugee,” but what you may not know is that the term is politically problematic. In order to be legally classified as refugees, people must be fleeing persecution or violence and must cross a national border. Countries are then obligated by international law to admit them. However, the narrow definition excludes those who are displaced within their own countries, or who choose to leave their countries due to environmental reasons … [Read more...] about The Human Cost of Climate Change
Looking at cold statistics, it seems the Trump-Biden race in 2020 is where the Trump-Hillary race was in mid-October 2016. Hillary had an approximately 10 point advantage in national polls; Biden has an 11 point lead in several national polls. MAGA Source: Visuals/Unsplash Democrats are rightly nervous and running scared, not taking anything for granted this time around in the battleground states. Former V.P. Joe Biden has been conducting scenic bus tours, long train journeys, and drive-in rallies throughout the countryside to avoid crowded settings due to coronavirus health guidelines, and to gather much needed suburban and rural voters. President Trump , on the other hand, is going back to what worked for him in 2016, airport-hanger rallies, despite “the super-spreader effect” at the White House where as many as 34 of his staff members may have been infected and his own diagnosis of two weeks ago, from which he claims he has fully recovered. His administration … [Read more...] about The Coronavirus Election

The truth is, not everyone is going to be excellent at everything they do. Most people won’t have an aptitude for all the things they attempt. Every child will not grow up to be the most coordinated/perceptive/insightful and emotionally stable person in the room. This means when adults praise everything a child does, we give them the impression that they will be terrific and competent in every area of their lives. While this may help children grow up feeling good about themselves, it also leaves them vulnerable to a rude awakening when they are outside of their families and the world doesn’t show them the same level of approval. While earned praise is great, praise that’s given just for showing up tends to give children a sense of false confidence . This means there may be a bitter pill to swallow when they have to compete in the real world and they find that things don’t always turn out the way they want. One of the benefits of failing at something is that you learn how to … [Read more...] about Kids Need to Learn How to Fail to Ultimately Succeed
