THE #MeToo movement may finally be gaining a foothold in India, as a prominent former actress and Miss Universe finalist speaks out against a veteran actor. Tanushree Dutta claims Bollywood heavyweight Nana Patekar behaved inappropriately towards her on a film set in 2008 by demanded intimate dance steps in a routine for the film Horn OK Please. This was despite her saying she was uncomfortable. Patekar denies the allegations, and has threatened legal action. Dutta left Bollywood after making the allegations, and said she turned down jobs because she felt "broken" and "humiliated". The #MeToo movement began last year after sexual misconduct allegations began to appear in the press against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. It has led to thousands of women sharing their stories of sexual harassment. Despite being the biggest film industry in the world, Bollywood has stayed more or less silent on the#MeToo front. The trailer for Batti Gul Meter Chalu, scheduled for release on September 21st, was recently released to acclaim. The film, helmed by the Toilet: Ek Prem Katha director Shree Narayan Singh, stars Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor alongside Divyendu Sharma and Yami Gautam. The film’s theme is truly commendable, for this is perhaps the first Bollywood film dealing with the subject of electricity theft.
