Naomi Klein, in This Changes Everything, points to the fact that people can be better than moral middle-of-the-roaders, citing the example of the great sacrifices people make in wartime. This comparison, I think, is not particularly comforting. In time of war, things have already changed dramatically. And, yes, we’re very good at amending our behavior after dramatic change. Give us some credit. But before? Not so much. Springing into action to circumvent something that will probably happen down the road is not really a strength of our species. The problem is that most of the things that are going to happen down the road are the result of us. In this sense, we are, and I absolutely include myself in this, unsuitable tenants of this planet.
