Is it just us, or did curls recently hire a new PR team? They're suddenly everywhere, from red carpets to social media to...the person sitting right next to you (don't look now!). Whether you’re a seasoned weightlifter or just starting out, getting the right pair of weightlifting shoes is important—and the best pair for you depends on what sort of lifting you’re performing. A proper pair of shoes could help push you past your PRs, but they can also help you maintain proper balance and technique. One 2012 study found that when lifters performed a one rep max barbell back squat, they were more likely to maintain proper form and reduce lower back strain while wearing weightlifting shoes versus basketball sneakers. A study from last year similarly found that compared to athletic shoes, weightlifting shoes reduced ankle movement and helped lifters maintain an upright torso during squats.Of course, weightlifting shoes will not help at all if you don’t have proper technique. "You don’t want to have a 25-cent squat in $200 shoes,” says Scott Caulfield, CSCS, the head strength and conditioning coach at the National Strength and … [Read more...] about The Best Weightlifting Shoes to Power You to Your Next PR

Although more than 1,000 miles apart, both Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and Jackson Health System in Miami have had an onslaught of bad press recently. One involves criminal sexual abuse allegations, the other a drunken tirade against an Uber driver caught on a video that was posted to YouTube and quickly went viral. As of last week, the video now had close to 6 million views. Dr. David Newman, an emergency room physician at Mount Sinai, turned himself over to the police after a woman claimed he drugged, groped her and then performed a lewd act when she went to the ER for shoulder pain on January 12. Newman, 45, has served in Iraq, taught at medical schools, and is an author of a book called "Hippocrates Shadow" about the doctor-patient relationship as well as The New York Times articles. A few days after the woman contacted the police about the alleged incident, the New York Daily News reported the police and … [Read more...] about Reputation is everything: How 2 hospitals are weathering PR firestorms
