Metformin is a drug that doctors use to treat people with type 2 diabetes. It works alongside other medication and insulin to lower blood sugar in people with the condition. Doctors do not usually prescribe metformin for type 1 diabetes. They can sometimes prescribe it for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome, although this use is not approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Similarly, the FDA has not sanctioned metformin to help those wanting to shed the pounds when they are overweight or obese. In this article, we take a look at the impact metformin has on weight, as well as how the drug is used. People with type 2 diabetes have lost weight from taking metformin, but they are not the only ones to benefit from the drug in this way. New research, published in the journal Appetite, suggests that, when it comes to dieting, it's not how much you eat — but rather, what you eat — that influences calorie intake the most. Faris Zuraikat, a graduate student in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at Pennsylvania State University, led the new study, which follows up from a previous 1-year randomized controlled trial that investigated how different food portions influenced weight loss. The former trial aimed to explore the so-called "portion size effect," which occurs when people are served bigger portions than what they originally wanted but end up eating more nonetheless. To this end, the previous trial trained the participants to gain more control over their portions, presenting them with useful strategies for portion size management. In this new trial study, the researchers wanted to see if people who had been previously trained to manage their portions would respond differently to increasing portion … [Read more...] about Eating less may not the best way to lose weight, study shows

And they are arguably the most talked-about part of any weight-loss journey. The general rule is that if you eat more calories than you use, you’ll gain weight. And if you take in fewer calories than you use, you’ll lose weight. And if those numbers are more or less even, your weight will stay about the same. So figuring out how many calories you need per day can be crazy-complicated.And, it's also important to remember that, when it comes to cutting calories for weight loss, lower is not always better. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, your calories should never … [Read more...] about How Many Calories Do I Need To Lose Weight?
The best news: Sleeping longer may be the key to reaching your health and weight loss goals. According to a new study from researchers at King's College London, people who snooze for an extra hour or so could end up consuming fewer sugars and carbohydrates. With 21 participants involved, the study was admittedly small; it was also a pilot, meaning more studies would be required to support its findings. Researchers recruited 42 people: half received a sleep consultation intended to up their time in bed by as many as 1.5 hours each night, while the other half proceeded with their bedtime habits as usual. Each person got an individualized set of instructions—no caffeine before bed; set a pre-sleep routine that promotes relaxation; don't go to bed too full or too hungry—and a suggested time to hit the hay.Is your bedroom making you a sh*ttier sleeper? Find out what to do:Over the next week, participants wore motion sensors to bed and kept diaries detailing their sleep … [Read more...] about Exactly How Much More You Should Sleep Each Night If You’re Trying To Lose Weight
