Niraj Warikoo Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EDT Oct 26, 2018 Some Bangladeshi immigrants say they're concerned about what they say is an increase in crime in their neighborhoods in Detroit near the Hamtramck border. On Sunday, many from the Bangladeshi-American community protested in Detroit off Conant south of Davison, chanting, "Stop violence" and "Enough is enough." A town hall is planned in coming weeks to address the issue of crime. Resident say they want more help from police and city officials, saying they've had more robberies, carjackings and shootings this year. On Oct. 17, a factory worker and father of two who's an immigrant from Bangladesh, Saleh Ahmed, was shot several times on his porch on Klinger Street at about 6 a.m. after he answered the door, said Bangladeshi-American advocates. For decades, the Bangladeshi immigrant community in Hamtramck and Detroit has steadily built up and revitalized areas with new stores, businesses, houses of worship, helping repopulate the area. But they have also struggled to gain visibility and the attention of the wider region. Now, a new mural — believed to be the biggest outdoor painting in the U.S. depicting Bangladeshi life — will be unveiled Sunday in a public celebration. U.S. voices concern over increasingly deadly Bangladeshi anti-drug…
DHAKA (Reuters) - The United States has expressed concern about a Bangladeshi anti-drugs campaign in which more than 100 people have died but the government has dismissed any suggestion of extra-judicial killings and said the crackdown had popular support. The Bangladesh government launched the drive against trafficking this month, and police have arrested more than 10,000 people across the country as alarm grows about drugs, in particular the spread of the stimulant methamphetamine. But the campaign has raised fears among rights activists of a Philippine-style war on drugs and the U.S. ambassador, Marcia Bernicat, voiced concern about the bloodshed. “Of course I express concern about the number of people dying,” Bernicat told reporters on Wednesday after talks with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan in which the campaign was discussed. “Everyone in a democracy has a right to due process. If there is a violent confrontation people may not survive that, but the goal … [Read more...] about U.S. voices concern over increasingly deadly Bangladeshi anti-drug…
