Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 7:07 p.m. UTC Aug 15, 2018 Frank Ragnow started most of his last two college seasons at center and was the best prospect at the position coming into this year's draft, but the Detroit Lions' first-round pick found in his first extended action at center Wednesday that playing the position in the NFL is a whole new ballgame. “I wouldn’t say it’s riding a bike," Ragnow said. "It’s a whole different league, whole different plays and everything, but it was good to be back. I’m just going to do whatever (my coaches) want me to do, I’m going to step up there, I’m going to try to be the best at it." The Lions gave Ragnow the bulk of the first-team reps at center in Wednesday's joint practice with the New York Giants, one day after Graham Glasgow left practice with a left leg injury. Glasgow took part in the Lions' pre-practice walk-through, but lined up at left guard instead of center for the … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions play rookie Frank Ragnow at center with Glasgow hurt

Carlos Monarrez Detroit Free Press Published 10:11 p.m. UTC Aug 13, 2018 Detroit Lions tight end Hakeem Valles has a simple, though certainly challenging, plan for this week. It goes like this. On Tuesday and Wednesday, he will take part in joint practices against the New York Giants in Allen Park. On Thursday, Valles’ wife is due to give birth to their first child, Lucienne, named after his grandmother. On Friday, Valles will play in the Lions’ preseason home opener against the Giants at Ford Field (7 p.m., Channel 2). And, with any luck, maybe he’ll even catch a touchdown in honor of his precious bundle of joy. “That’d be awesome,” Valles said Monday after practice. “That would be a great way for her to enter the world.” More: Training camp observations: Lions shake up starting defense It wouldn’t be a stretch think Valles could pull down a TD or two. Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 11:37 p.m. UTC Aug 8, 2018 NAPA, Calif. — Matthew Stafford had no idea what to expect the first time he took part in joint practices two years ago against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, the Lions quarterback has come to enjoy them. “I had just never done it before and it’s kind of interesting trying to adapt to different styles of practice,” Stafford said Wednesday after wrapping up two days of joint workouts with the Oakland Raiders. “Everybody kind of has their own pace, their own flow. Luckily, the three teams that we’ve gone against have been great in just helping us get good work. That’s what we’re out here for. We’re out here to compete against other really good NFL football teams.” The Lions have one more set of joint practices on tap next week against the New York Giants, but before that they have a preseason football game to play.
