Source: Pixel2013/Pixabay In a world’s first, a team of researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Weill Institute for Neurosciences released a study showing a brain-computer interface (BCI) with “plug and play” capabilities using machine learning . The solution enables a paralyzed patient's brain to control a computer using the device without extensive daily retraining. Karunesh Ganguly, an assistant professor at UCSF and associate professor of neurology at UCSF Medical Center, is the senior author of the paper, published on September 7 in Nature Biotechnology . “Plug and play” refers to the ability of a device to work as intended upon initial start, without any user intervention, such as reconfiguration or adjustments. For example, many computer peripherals, such as the mouse, keyboard, monitor, USB flash drive, and web camera typically work upon plug-in connection without any additional configurations. The ease-of-use of “plug and play” … [Read more...] about World’s First “Plug and Play” Brain-Computer Interface

Online quizzes are a great way to answer questions like: Which Hogwarts house do you belong in? They are not ideal for answering questions like: What kind of therapeutic protocol should I follow? The best way to answer that question is by consulting a psychotherapist or a psychiatrist. However, this article may prove a helpful, fact-based guide to point you in a good direction. Overcome brain blindness and regain cognitive clarity. Source: Faisal Rahman/Pexels In Part 1, we explored the dynamics of the Dunning-Kruger effect and its harmful impact on mental health and relationships. In Part 2, we will explore the question: If brain blindness poses such a threat, what can we do to circumvent it? Researchers Rollwage, Dolan, and Fleming in their 2018 study found that people who hold more extreme/radical beliefs are usually are less aware of the weaknesses of their view, have a low level of insight, and dogmatically stick to their viewpoints even when presented with disconfirming evidence. Researchers believe this is due to low metacognition , meaning they aren’t able to reflect on their own thinking and performance. Those who possess more moderate views are able to be realistic about their own viewpoints. A good case in point is the ending scene from the documentary Behind the Curve on Netflix. Throughout the movie, filmmakers follow the … [Read more...] about Overcoming Brain Blindness
