By now, you’ve probably heard all about how Gwyneth Paltrow’s website Goop is recommending a do-it-yourself coffee enema called the Implant O-Rama System. For $135, you can flush warm brewed coffee up your butt and the website claims it will “hydrate and irrigate” your lower intestine.Earlier this week, various media outlets mocked the Goop endorsement. But gastroenterologists and emergency room physicians who spoke with Men’s Health said coffee enemas aren't just silly — they're potentially dangerous. At-home enemas or “colon cleanses” offered at spas can make you seriously ill, according to these tales of enemas gone wrong. Also called colonics, colon and bowel cleanses, and colon detoxes, enemas are nothing new. David M. Poppers, MD, PhD, a gastroenterologist at NYU Langone Health and a clinical associate professor of medicine at NYU School of Medicine, says the practice of bowel cleansing has been around for hundreds or even thousands … [Read more...] about These ER Horror Stories Prove Why You Should Never Do a Coffee Enema

Like most men, I am a hygiene centrist: I fall somewhere between Queer Eye and Pigpen. Except with Q-tips—give me a 300 pack and I'll start twirling till they whir. Yesss! A sucker for that Q-tip eargasm, I scoffed at the warning on the box: "Do not use swab in ear canal." Who were they kidding? Then came the first ear infection. "You're a Q-tipper, aren't you?" the ear doctor asked, poking in my ear canal till it felt like a root canal. Turns out all my swabbing had merely pushed my earwax deeper, where it formed a festering "wax plug." As I winced, the doctor smiled. This man hated Q-tips, and he was teaching me a lesson. "Never," he said, probing deeper, "put a Q-tip down . . . this . . . far!"Ow! But I couldn't give it up, so I found a specialist who allows canal cleaning with a swab dipped in hydrogen peroxide. I'm Q-tipping again, my eyes rolling up in my head. So the obsession is still there. And so are the risks, as I know all too well. Here's a guide to where hygiene … [Read more...] about Find out if You’re a Clean Freak
A morning cup of coffee is a must-have for those who rely on caffeine to get their day going. However, many people also find their morning cup of coffee literally causes them to "go" to the bathroom and have a bowel movement. An enema is a practice that involves inserting liquid into the rectum to relieve constipation or to prepare for a procedure to look at the bowel. Long-standing constipation can be very uncomfortable and harmful, leading to a possible small bowel blockage and even a hole in the bowel. People have used a range of … [Read more...] about What Does a Coffee Enema Do?
