5 Messages for My Younger Autistic Self
Boy running. Source: Jonas Mohamadi/Pexels In a previous article, we discussed the late diagnosis of autism , an increasingly common phenomenon that has been attributed to increased awareness, broadening of the diagnostic criteria, and the introduction of the notion of an autism spectrum. 1 This diagnostic process involves rewinding back to childhood and closely examining our experiences to find evidence of lifelong autistic characteristics. During this process of reflecting on childhood experiences, and as they are clearly marked as autistic, one is often led to ask, Why did nobody see this sooner? Why has it taken this long to know and understand? and then to question whether an earlier diagnosis would have spared heartache or pain or a feeling of not belonging. In reflecting on this process, we have formulated a (non-exhaustive) list of things we wish we could have told our younger autistic selves. While we cannot turn back time, we can share these messages … [Read more...] about 5 Messages for My Younger Autistic Self
Eating Disorders in Gender-Expansive Individuals
Eating disorder research—and the treatment that it informs—has long been limited by a myopic focus on thin, young, white, cisgendered women. This narrow perspective excludes marginalized groups, such as Black women , from research, leaving us with little to no empirical data on how these groups are impacted by eating disorders and how they respond to treatment interventions. A recent study by Nagata et al (2020) was one of the first to examine eating disorders in gender-expansive populations. The researchers define gender-expansive as the spectrum of gender identities that do not fit within the binary (man or woman) identity system. This may include people who identify as agender (do not identify as having a gender), genderqueer or non-binary (gender identity is outside the binary), pangender (identification with multiple or all genders), and gender fluid (gender identity that shifts with time). Gender-expansive is distinct from transgender (identify as the gender … [Read more...] about Eating Disorders in Gender-Expansive Individuals
The Pied Piper of the Pandemic
One of the strangest aspects of the current pandemic has been the denial practiced by so many of its victims — not to mention the extent to which this denial has often contributed to the victimization itself. Stranger yet is that this denial apparently includes not only people who haven’t contracted the virus or know anyone who has, but even some who actually test positive. Even more astounding is the degree to which said denial seems to have permeated the attitudes of some who refuse to accept the reality of their situation even as they are dying of it. This denial is not “merely” a refusal to acknowledge their own impending death (not in itself uncommon), but an insistence that the cause isn’t COVID because that isn’t a genuine, life-threatening disease but rather, a hoax dreamed up by political liberals seeking to undermine the presidency of Donald Trump. Strange indeed. Or maybe not. As quoted in The Washington Post of November 16, Judy Doering — an emergency room nurse … [Read more...] about The Pied Piper of the Pandemic
Doubling Down: Why People Deny the Facts
If this highly politicized era teaches us anything, it is the extent to which many Americans will go to maintain their beliefs. Claims about “fake” news and rigged elections are manifestations of this. So is the argument that the viral pandemic is exaggerated, even a hoax. We have witnessed a radicalization of political parties, emboldening paramilitary groups, and fostering wild conspiracy theories. A mob breached our Capitol. Possibilities of criminal prosecution for the perpetrators, as well as censure and impeachment of public officials, are in the air. Many people expressed horror at the insurrection. Others acknowledged their chagrin, even some measure of shame . But millions of others made no such acknowledgments. Indeed, they only hardened their view that their side is right and the other is wrong. To use Blackjack lingo, they doubled down. In the neighborhood where I live, at least three families have taken to flying their American flag upside down. One might imagine … [Read more...] about Doubling Down: Why People Deny the Facts
