I didn't become overweight until I was about 16 years old. I had just started dating my boyfriend (who is now my husband!), and within the year first year of our relationship, I had gained so much weight. We spent a lot of time going out to eat and/or whipping up pizza rolls and bagel bites for dinner. I found myself eating double portions or going for seconds at every meal, not to mention drinking a lot of alcohol at the time. I noticed that I was gaining weight and had not-great eating habits, but I never cared enough at the time to do anything about it. I continued down that road throughout the rest of high school, and in the first few years after. Then, I got pregnant at the age of 20. Before I got pregnant in May 2011, I was probably about 145 to 150 pounds. One month during my pregnancy I gained 13 pounds (which my doctor pointed out was a significant amount to gain in just a month's time during pregnancy), but I couldn't control how much I was eating. After I had my baby boy in … [Read more...] about ‘I Lost 61 Pounds By Swapping Out Simple Carbs’
Nathaniel Hargrove was 140 pounds in the fourth grade. At his high school graduation, he had doubled to 280. He thought he was cursed: Though he lifted, he lacked the nutritional knowledge needed to really slim down. By the time he was in his 30s, Hargrove's weight was topping 330. Thanks to a special nutrition and exercise regimen, Hargrove would eventually drop 90 pounds and pack on muscle. But the change came only after a series of embarrassing medical tests.By 2017, Hargrove had come to think of himself just as a “big guy.” Not out of shape. Athletic. But big. He had been on blood pressure medication for years. High blood pressure just ran in the family, he assumed. His father had died of a heart attack the previous year. But Hargrove couldn’t see the signs: He was short tempered, struggling to wake up, and driving to work half asleep. He got headaches and blurred vision. He was worn out by the time he got home to his wife and daughters.Hargrove went to his family … [Read more...] about How This Guy Lost 90 Pounds and Got Absolutely Shredded
Celebs and apple cider vinegar diets go together like The Bachelor and helicopter dates: Kourtney Kardashian reportedly drinks ACV twice a day, Victoria Beckham has two tablespoons on an empty stomach in the a.m., and Hilary Duff swears by a morning shotTbh, as a health writer, my b.s. radar goes off when I see these types of claims, but I was still curious, so I set to find out: Is the hype surrounding "ACV diets" legit? First of all, what constitutes an "ACV diet?" Let's just be clear about one thing: There's no specific "apple cider vinegar diet" to follow. Apple cider vinegar itself (or ACV, as the kids call it), comes from apples that have been crushed, distilled, and then fermented. And FYI: The apples are really only secondary in any ACV trends—the main component of the "diet" is ACV's presence of acetic acid—the vinegar that comes from the fermentation process. As far as "dosing" recommendations go, ACV doses differ between sources, but the general thought is that … [Read more...] about ‘I Drank Apple Cider Vinegar For A Month’

Patrick Eslick remembers the first time someone made a “comment” about his weight. It was in the second grade. Things got worse during his teenage years, not only because of his growing size, but also the realization that he was gay. Eslick started shying away from the physical activities other boys were participating in (football, track, baseball). He started spending a lot of time on the couch alone snacking—his size and his sexuality alienated him in high school. In college, the snacking and eating and (especially) the drinking got worse. He graduated at 340 pounds, feeling depressed, anxious, and barred from the activities his new-found friends were able to enjoy.Eslick would go on to lose 185 pounds in the years following college, dropping to a lean 155. He always thought reaching 200 would be next to impossible, but it all started with a simple resolution. College graduation commenced Eslick's new mindset. “It felt like the perfect opportunity to make … [Read more...] about This Man Lost 185 Pounds by Falling in Love With Cooking
