Friendships may begin a variety of ways, but they don’t endure if friends don’t offer each other respect, authenticity, and support. If a friend isn’t “real” with us, then there’s not much there on which to grow a relationship. Without authenticity, there can be no intimacy. We may have many “activity friends,” the type of relationship that is built on shared interests or activities that draw you together. These relationships can be totally rewarding and provide you with companionship and friends to do things with when you don’t want to do something or go somewhere alone. Some of these relationships might deepen into closer friendships, but intimacy won’t develop in every friendship. Fortunately, that’s okay, because humans don’t have the resources necessary to maintain a huge number of close friendships. When it comes right down to it, the basic purpose of friendship is to provide mutual support, mutual respect, and mutual admiration.
