A 9-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a car Thursday near his Hammonton home was a team player who always sought to help others, his mother said. Christopher Sacco was struck by the vehicle in the afternoon after he ran into the street near his home on Moss Mill Road, wanting to pick up the mail. “My child was never allowed to be near that road,” Chris’s mother, Maryanne Morrison Sacco, said Saturday in a phone interview. “He wanted to go get the mail. He ran in the middle of the road.” Morrison Sacco said the driver stayed at the scene and she doesn’t blame him for her son’s death, which she called “a freak accident.” The crash remained under investigation Saturday. It was unclear if the driver faced charges. Hammonton police said no one was available to provide details. A spokeswoman for the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, which is assisting in the investigation, deferred questions to the police. Chris was a fourth-grade student at Warren E. Sooy, Jr. Elementary School and an avid athlete who played football, soccer and baseball and rooted for the Washington Redskins.
